Andrea's Diary (Part 14)

The one question that I'm constantly being asked is how do you have the nerve to go out and about as Andrea, especially during the day and in ordinary situations?

Once again - many thanks for all your emails with comments and ideas for subject matter for my Diaries. (You know the address by now : andmiz@tiscali.co.uk ). I'm still looking for that London Office where I can be a secretary/receptionist for the day1 - you never know!

Out and About - Part 2

The one question that I'm constantly being asked is how do you have the nerve to go out and about as Andrea, especially during the day and in ordinary situations?

As I out outlined in my Diary No.2 it simply distils down to "the four Ps": Purpose, Planning, Presentation, and be Prepared. I'm concerned that I don't repeat too much here, but if you could sum up all that is needed it has to be a PURPOSE. A girl on a mission is just that, and not a guy who is pretending to be girl and not succeeding.

Remember, except in an entirely T-Girl environment (such as a Transformation Shop Shop Girl for the day, or at a dedicated T-Girl night club such as Transmission in London, or The Northern Concord in Manchester), you will NEVER be immune from potentially being 'read' - its your confidence in dealing with such a situation that you have to master.

Hence being on your 'mission' you have something to focus upon, and any distraction that occurs around you is not of any concern to you.

OK, having said all that, I still go out in outfits that would draw possible attention to any woman - yes, I just love really short skirts and also (where the location allows) high heels - and I don't mean 4"! - but what I try and achieve is a balance between my appearance and the location that I'm in.

A recent example was at the beginning of February this year, when I went to report on the London Edge Fashion Fair. I arrived at Transformation, as is usual for me on such days, at 9.00am as they opened their doors. I was made up to their usual high standards and was ready to venture off into the streets of London.

I was heading for the Commonwealth Institute in Kensington High Street, and the only practicable way there was to go by black cab. I knew that I would need to walk down from the shop towards Euston station, and thus started in some moderate (for me) 4" heels. It's a question of practicality - there was no point in venturing out in my really high heels hoping I would only have a few metres to walk for a cab.

Needless to say, I usually don't have much trouble hailing a cab (legs!), and soon I was on my way. The day involved meeting up with my photographer (Don Allen) and us walking round the Fair looking for possible clothes ideas and friendly suppliers for girls like us. (Subject of a future Diary, possibly).

In the cab I sent a text to Don letting him know I was on my way, and also changed into some serious heels! Now I knew where I was going and whether I could survive in such heels - you really need to be careful in 6" stilettos.
